On the ground, the question often arises during the initial steps: we want to supervise weight training sessions or group classes, but without the right diploma, it is impossible to work legally in a gym. The BPJEPS, and more specifically its mention related to fitness activities, remains the key that the vast majority of organizations require before any hiring.

BPJEPS AF or BPJEPS APSF: understanding the name change

When you start looking for a training organization, you quickly come across two different acronyms. The BPJEPS AF (Fitness Activities) is the historical name. Recently, the BPJEPS APSF (Physical and Sports Activities of Fitness) is gradually replacing it. According to FORMAPI, the new certification was published in the Official Journal on December 5, 2025, with a registration valid until September 10, 2030.

In practice, not all centers have yet switched to the new title. Some still display “BPJEPS AF” on their brochures, while others are already using “BPJEPS APSF” in their registration documents. Before signing, it is advisable to check directly with the organization which reference it applies and whether the certification issued will indeed be the one registered with the RNCP.

This administrative detail has a concrete consequence: the exercise prerogatives are linked to the mention on the diploma. As the BPJEPS guide on Mon Coach A Domicile reminds us, the Sports Code precisely distinguishes the authorized activities according to the specialty held.

Weightlifting-bodybuilding mention or group classes: what each option really allows

The BPJEPS fitness activities come in two distinct mentions. Each mention opens different supervision prerogatives, and this distinction is not cosmetic. Annex II-1 of the Sports Code, in its version in force since June 9, 2025, regulates the conditions of practice by mention.

With the weightlifting-bodybuilding mention, one can supervise individual or group sessions on a weight training platform. With the group classes mention, one intervenes in formats such as cardio, muscle strengthening, and stretching. One cannot freely switch from one to the other.

This point regularly creates misunderstandings. A coach holding only the group classes mention cannot, in theory, supervise a practitioner on a strength program in a weight training room. To cover both areas, one must obtain both mentions, which lengthens the training path.

  • Weightlifting-bodybuilding mention: supervision on weight training platform, individualized coaching, programming of strength or hypertrophy cycles
  • Group classes mention: leading group sessions (cardio, strengthening, LIA, step), designing choreographies and collective training formats
  • Double mention: the only option to legitimately intervene in both formats, often offered in an extended path by organizations

Alternation and funding of the BPJEPS: the real calculation to make

Most candidates turn to alternation to finance their BPJEPS. The idea seems simple: an employer covers the costs through its OPCO, and the trainee receives a salary during the training. In reality, finding an employer willing to sign an apprenticeship contract remains the main obstacle.

Independent gyms sometimes hesitate to commit for the duration of a contract. Large chains have strict recruitment schedules. Starting your search several months before the training start date is not a comfort, it is a necessity.

The rules for financing apprenticeships have also been recently reassessed, with adjustments to the levels of coverage. Comparing the total cost, the status during training, and the availability of an employer gives a more realistic picture than focusing solely on the duration of the course. Initial training costs more out of pocket, but it frees up the company’s schedule.

Pre-requisite tests and field requirements for the BPJEPS

Before joining the training, each candidate must pass the TEP (pre-requisite tests). These physical and technical tests vary according to the chosen mention. They assess the ability to demonstrate movements, supervise a small group, or achieve a reference physical performance.

The TEP are not a formality. Motivated candidates fail due to lack of specific preparation. The tests evaluate both technical mastery and the ability to verbalize and correct a gesture, which already implies regular practice and a minimum of pedagogy.

On the administrative side, one must have a medical certificate attesting to the ability to practice and supervise sports. Some organizations add a motivational interview or a positioning file to assess the entry level.

Legal scope of the BPJEPS diploma: what can and cannot be done

One point that feedback from the field confirms: the BPJEPS is not a general authorization to supervise all sports disciplines. The diploma allows practice within the strict scope defined by the mention held. Supervising an activity outside the mention exposes one to sanctions, and the gym operator also engages their responsibility.

To broaden one’s field of intervention (specific physical preparation, aquatic activities, outdoor activities), one must aim for complementary certifications or a higher-level diploma such as the DESJEPS. The CQP (professional qualification certificate) can also complement a profile, especially for specialized slots.

The coaching market is evolving rapidly, and the structures that recruit are increasingly verifying professional cards. Holding the right mention protects the coach as much as their practitioners. Before embarking, carefully reading the prerogatives listed on one’s professional card avoids gray areas that can be costly.
